RMP, headquartered in Uttan (Thane, Maharashtra), was registered as an autonomous Charitable Trust in 1982. It was initiated as a unique leadership development academy with an aim to nurture, impart training and build capacities of elected representatives, social workers, as well as people running institutions, organizations, and start-ups. RMP is an approved training partner of the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Government of India. RMP has also been active in conceiving and executing research projects concerning socially pertinent issues, including those of the backward classes and rural communities. Additionally, RMP also focuses on undertaking public-awakening activities. RMP is one of the unique institutions in South Asia and Southeast Asia, having been granted special consultative status by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Since its inception, RMP has trained over 60,000 individuals, comprising MPs, MLAs, their associated staff, Panchayat office bearers, NGOs, corporates, entrepreneurs and youth. The entities under the umbrella institution of RMP include Atal Incubation Centre (AIC-RMP), Indian Institute of Democratic Leadership (IIDL), Knowledge Excellence Centre (RMP-KEC), RMP International, and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Research Centre and Library.
